How to prepare for your in-class essay

1. Choose a topic
    - some may be too broad and some too narrow a focus
    - make sure that you’re not skimming over or running out of ideas
    - keep your objective in mind:
*to illustrate and reflect your understanding of the text and larger themes

2. Make an outline for your essay
    A. Thesis statement
    B. Topic sentences for each paragraph/point you are making (2 least 3)
    C. Find at least one quote from the book that supports each  point
    D. Conclusion

3. What you may bring to class
    A. paper; pencil/pen
    B. book
    C. 3x5 card with outline and page #s
