For 1/11 (Wednesday) and 1/12 (Thursday)

1) Read Chapters 6- 9

2) Guiding questions for your reading - no need to write out unless you feel it is helpful1
  • What does Lord Henry say is the "real drawback to marriage"? 
  • What does it mean to be "good," according to Lord Henry? (75-76) 
  • What does Lord Henry tell Dorian Gray that he represents to the young man? (77)
  • How do you interpret Dorian’s reaction to Sibyl’s lackluster performance? (81)
  • What do his reaction and response tell you about his character?
  • What does Dorian represent to Sybil? (83)
  • What does Dorian discover has happened to his portrait?(87)
  •  After Dorian sees how the picture has changed, he promises himself that he will “resist temptation from now on (88). Do you think he’ll be successful at that?
    • The next morning,  Dorian is met with news of what occurrence? How does that change his outlook on his new resolution? who does he blame? (94-95) 
    • How does Lord Henry attempt to turn Dorian away from grief and remorse? Dorian makes a choice on page 101 -  explain.
    • Look at Dorian's thoughts of Basil at the end of Chapter 9 as compared to his feelings in Chapter 2. What has changed?
    • What confession does Basil make to Dorian about the portrait and about his former attitude towards Dorian himself?

On page 41, Lord Henry states, "To get back one's youth, one has merely to repeat one's follies."

For one typed page, discuss the following:
  • What is Lord Henry's attitude towards morality?  
  • What code or set of beliefs does Lord Henry live by? 
  • How does he view conventional morality and in what ways does he challenge it? 
  • Why, for instance, does he believe it is futile and wrong for the individual to resist temptation?
